On our second day in Hampshire, we decided to visit Mottisfont House and Gardens which is owned an maintained by the National Trust, and situated in Romsey and sits beside the River Test.
Ancient trees, bubbling brooks and rolling lawns frame this lovely old house. Crafted from a medieval priory, it is full of surprises, with art that intrigues and delights. Come back throughout the year to see different exhibitions in the gallery and the latest installations by our artists in residence.
We have visited many National Trust places, but we were totally astounded by the beauty of this house and its gardens. As we strolled by the River Test on the riverside walk, it was peaceful, tranquil and made you fell glad you were alive.
Mottisfont is a beautiful place to visit and one of our favourites now, and most definitely will be returning, hopefully in the spring as the spring bulbs start to bloom.
The walled gardens were spectacular and the house was so impressive… and on the ground floor (which also hosts the cafe) there are the remains of the monastery.
The way the lighting was done was fantastic. Unfortunately you can’t use a flash in the house and monastery part, which is rather a shame as there is some noise in the above photograph, which I can’t remove without losing some of the clarity.
Anyway we had a wonderful day there.. and could have spent more time there but we also wanted to go to Buckler’s Hard near Beaulieu that afternoon and take the river boat down the Beaulieu river.
